How to Catch a Halibut

Going halibut fishing is almost every anglers dream since it is a very enjoyable sport and due to their large weight size, pose quite a challenge to anglers.  In order to catch these fish, one requires the right kind of equipment and tactics that will come in handy as these fish are quite large, and have a tendency for bottom-dwelling.  Halibut fishing requires one to scout their location first and foremost in order to catch them.  Getting equipment that will help map out their location will really come in handy as they prefer dwelling in the bottom of the sea.  There are various obstructions that one can find at the bottom of the ocean such as depressions, rocks and valleys thus making it hard to catch them.  In order to identify fishing spots that are ideal, one should use sonars or other electronic equipment that outline the contours and depths of the ocean.

Like any other fishing, Halibut fishing in Ketchikan requires one to have bait in order to catch fish.  One should choose bait that will greatly attract halibuts such as octopuses, mackerel heads, guts or even live squids.  One can also use artificial bait which include plastic fish that are made to look like anchovy or sardine to lure the fish.  While fishing, adding a scent to the fishing line and bait as well will help attract the fish and lure them easily.  Fishing lines that are weak or of poor quality can be easily broken by these fish hence one should use a strong one.

Going for halibut fishing Ketchikan Alaska as a group of friends would be very enjoyable.  The company will be pleasant and also the more the baits put in water the higher the chances of actually catching halibut.  Since halibut spend most of their time near the bottom of the sea or ocean, one should drop their bait there.  Raising the bait higher and higher slowly once the fish bites it will enhance your chances of actually catching it.  Once it takes the bait, one can start reeling in the fish and if it breaks free, you can try the process over again.

It is important for one to weaken the halibut before bringing it in due to its strength.  This makes it harder for the fish to resist making the chances of it hurting or injuring the angler close to minimal.  One can simply use a gaff or harpoon in order to wound the fish.  Guns can also work though they might be illegal in some countries and tend to be more dangerous than harpoons.

A halibut that is wounded will bleed to death thus providing the angler with meat for later.  In order to preserve the fish, one should ensure they put it in ice as soon as it dies.
